Renny – Rehabilitating – In Need of Sponsors!
Renny is an 18-year-old Off-the-Track Thoroughbred Gelding who stands at __ hands. His Jockey Club Racing Name is “Relentless Pursuit”. During his racing career he only had 5 starts but he won his owners over $21,040. After racing he found himself where every Thoroughbred is pretty much discarded when they can’t win any more money, at a kill pen. He was in a kill pen in Tennessee with a deadline that was almost up but thankfully Race Funds was able to bail him! Race Funds not only paid for his bail but also his quarantine. Once he was in quarantine he was put on anti-inflammatory since his hip looked dislocated or even possibly broken. A vet went to go take a look at him while in quarantine, thank God his hip wasn’t broke as she believes it is missing a lot of muscle mass. This could have been done by an old soft tissue injury or EPM. He was tested for EPM, and it came back positive. We are hoping it caught it early so he has a chance of making a full recovery. For people who don’t know what EPM is, EPM is Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis which is when rodent (mainly opossum) poop is wrapped up in hay when baled. Other animals who can carry EPM is cats, skunks, raccoons, armadillos, and sea otters. EPM cannot be passed from one horse who has it to another horse as it is not contagious. EPM affects the central nervous system and the spinal cord. If it is treated somewhat early the horse can possibly overcome, it but if not, the horse will have some forever side effects. Renny had already started EPM treatment which the vet chose to use Rebalance. It is a very expensive medication as each bottle costs $272. He has already finished one bottle and is on his second bottle. We would like to appreciate After Racing who sponsored his second bottle of Rebalance. He is an absolute sweetheart! He is one of the goofiest horses here and you can pretty much do anything to him, he will tolerate it! A great example, he had a photoshoot with a cowboy on compared to the other horses, he was the only one who kept it on long enough for some pictures. After he receives all his Rebalance treatment our vet will come out to see if he will be allowed to cleared for riding. If he is, then he will receive a riding evaluation to see if he is sound. We will continue to update his page as we learn more about him!
