Bonnie Blue – Crossed the Rainbow Bridge to Heaven
Bonnie Blue is a 30-year-old Arabian who was saved from slaughter by bidding against a kill buyer at auction in December of 2016. She was 27-year-old when she was rescued. An extremely high percentage (over 90%) of senior horses sent to auction will be won by a kill buyer and sent to slaughter in Canada or Mexico. She was most likely a show horse in her prime and she is still quite the diva. She does not tend to leave the barn much. Bonnie only has a couple teeth left so she receives only wet Senior food and a High – Fat feed to make sure she can maintain her weight along with full time access to hay. She loves to be brushed if you would brush her all day long, she would certainly let you. She is a part of our Oldies but Goldies sections but do not worry they still receive all the love in the world! Her sidekick in crime is Lily the Pony, ever since Lily has arrived at the rescue, they have been inseparable. Bonnie can be adopted out as a companion horse, but Lily the Pony will have to be adopted as well cannot be separated. Sadly, on March 9, 2021 Ms. Debbie arrived at the barn doing her usually check up before starting feeding and noticed Bonnie was laying down. She got her up and a few minutes later she went back down, this is a huge sign she was colicing. We got her up and started to walk her around while the vet was on her way. The vet inspected her and sadly told us she had strangulation lipoma. It is a type of colic caused when a fatty tumor gets wrapped around the same intestines. The best thing for her was to help her cross over, as it devastated poor Lily her best friend. Lily got to say her final goodbye as we let every best friend do that when a horse cross over. Bonnie kindness and loving ways will be missed here at the rescue. We would take the most time making her food since she had very little amount of teeth left so we would have to make it very soupy for her, as she was worth it. She was just a grand lady especially when she would do a little run just to remind us she didn’t have the body of an old lady. We love you Bonnie!
