Biggie Smalls – Crossed the Rainbow Bridge to Heaven
Biggie Smalls is a 12-year-old Standardbred Gelding who stands at 15.2 hands. He was a harness racer and his USTA name is “Big Award” he won over $59,000. He was saved from a kill pen in Asheboro, NC. When he arrived sadly, he was a 1 on the body scale. He had severe rain rot all over, fresh whip marks that were open, a wound on his coronary band on the back left, and a recently drained abscess along with another one waiting to drain. When he arrived during his 3rd day he developed Strangles. He also had nails from shoes that broke off a long time ago that were still in his front hooves. After getting a farrier out to see him he was wonderful by the way thank you Allen, the laminae were stretched plus he had bruising on his hoof. Biggie had worms too. After all of that he still finds it in him to trust us slowly and gain a bond with us. He is the sweetest kindhearted horse you will ever meet. He never shows negative behavior; he is always doing his own thing. He likes to feel part of the herd but tends to be a loner sometimes. He is the lowest on the pecking order due to how mellow and easy going he is. He is a companion horse due to him being lame. He has a back-end problem making him not rideable, but he still has a lot of love to give anyone. Something was up with him because he was not shedding his winter coat, so one day we got the vet out to get bloodwork done. Turns out he had liver damage, but it was not extreme. With quick action he started to only feed him Tribute Kalm and EZ. It is low sugar and low protein which is great for his condition. He has been doing great since and his levels are back down too low! Sadly, as his one-year anniversary of being rescued his back end gave out. It was such a hard decision to make since he was so young, but he was in pain, so he had to do what was best for him. We love you Biggie Smalls!
