Maggie – Crossed the Rainbow Bridge to Heaven

Maggie is a 17 year old Off-the-Track Thoroughbred Mare who stands at 16.3 hands. She was saved from a Kill Pen in Pennsylvania of 2019, she arrived here at the rescue in February 2019. She was dumped into the Slaughter Pipeline since she had Degenerative Suspensory Ligament Disease better known as (DSLD). If you don’t know the disease by this name it can also be known as Equine Systemic Proteoglycan Accumulation (ESPA) is a systemic disease of the connective tissue of the horse and other equines. We knew this was a hospice case in the later stages of the disease when she arrived. This disease doesn’t have a cure but there are ways to reduce the pain, so that is what we did. Maggie received natural supplements and pain medication so she would do okay. We wanted her to know what love was before passing away because she had never had that before. She is a huge sweetheart who adores attention from volunteers and loves to just feel loved. She was very easy going and didn’t have one mean bone in her body.  After a few months of her feeling comfortable she started to decrease sadly. We discovered that the disease moved up to her Hocks. She started to lose weight, she showed no interest in her food anymore. Maggie let us know it was time, we helped her cross the bridge to Heaven in August 2019. We love you Maggie!
