Hans – Permanent Resident – Partial Sponsored by Paula D!
Hans is a 22-year-old Halflinger Pony who stands at 13.1 hands. I out bid a trader/ horse flipper at the auction in Lumberton in 2016. When Hans first arrived at the rescue it was first noted at one of his ears and sometimes his head would tilt slightly to the side. You never know their history when you buy a horse from auction, so it was thought that we were a possible carousel pony, when they walk in circles (on the left side). A few months after arriving he started to separate himself from the other horses and was not regularly active which was very odd. I started to research his symptoms and turned out he had EPM which stands for Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis. Horses get EPM from when the farmers roll the hay and rodent mainly possum dropping gets rolled into it. It affects a horse neurotically if their immune system is low, low immune systems are caused when a horse does not get their frequent shots. We got him tested for EPM and he had elevated levels. He was treated for EPM for 30 days and he has been good since. Every year he will get a 10-day treatment to ensure that he will stay EPM free. Hans has been used for pony rides before and hopefully we can get him back into it soon. He is very close to JoJo and you will always see them close to each other. He tends to be more quiet and slow roaming around the rescue. He is currently partial sponsored by Paula D!!
