Teddy – Companion Horse – In Need of Sponsors!
Teddy is a 16 year old Appendix Gelding who stands at 15.3 hands. He was a local surrender case here in Linden, NC by people who cared about his well-being. His owner stopped feeding him because he was lame so the neighbors stepped in by reaching out to the rescue for help. Without hesitation we took him in and he arrived at the rescue on October 5,2021 in rough condition. He was a 1.5 on the body scale, had old shoes on that were too small, bad thrush, and through all of this he was still a sweet loving guy. The farrier came the next day to relieve him the pain of the old shoes being on. The vet also came to do a further examination of his situation. The vet discovered he had no soles in his hooves at all! He was only 8 millimeters between the ground and his bone as it is suppose to be at least 18 millimeters. He received special boots to help elevate him so help relieve some of the pain. He is also getting durasole on his sole and frog which will help strengthen and build his hooves. He receives bute to help with any pain he is in along with any inflammation in his tendons that was caused from his hooves being so bad. We recently took the special boots off after two months of his arrival because his soles are showing improvement. His hooves will need to be trimmed and monitored regularly for now until he has fully healed. He has one floppy ear that could have potential had an accident cutting some nerves. He is also known as “Lucky Teddy” or “Teddy Bear” by our volunteers. He has fallen in love with Lady Winner who is a Thoroughbred! They are the stalls next to each other, that’s how their relationship started. Everywhere she goes he has to be with her or else he will tell us we wants to go with her. He even talks to us if she is not in her sight luckily for him the love is the same for her as well! He must be adopted out with Lady Winner since they are so bonded. He is an absolute sweetheart who is just a sweet soul. He loves attention and loves to know that will only experience love from now on. He warms up to any individual quickly as long as you will pet him. He talks to you when he sees you with his grain. After a long year of rehabbing his hooves they are finally back to normal. The vet did do some more X-rays and there is no sign of any founder that took place. We are hoping in a few months he will be sound to ride. We will update his page when we do his soundness evaluation again.
